Houston- Shiner Brewery

Another of Billy's must see sites in Texas has been Shiner Brewery in Shiner, TX. The tour, guide, and town didn't dissapoint. Shiner is one of the few breweries which still uses copper kettles for brewing. They also pasteurize their beer after brewing, but that was the only disappointing part of the visit. Shiner only does tours during the week and they fill up quick so we arrived early for the 11am tour. Shiner, like other breweries offers retirement for some of its flavors, but will bring them back if demand requires. Our tour guide Anne was a wealth of information on Shiner, other microbreweries, and Shiner, TX. She recommended a killer cafe called Rena's just down the street. Rena's had an amazing desert bar, buffet, and burgers laced with tryptophan.

Shiner is about two hours west of Houston and beautiful drive even for those that don't drink. We drove through rolling green hills, trees, and small country towns. For those that like to ride bikes Shiner offers a bike ride every May from San Antonio, Austin, and Houston to Shiner. After arriving and drinking they will bus you back with bike to your city of origin. Even Billy thought this sounded like a great idea.
