Louisiana Visit- Tabasco & Abita

We spent one week in Louisiana to visit Billy's family, relax, do laundry, and complete his list of items he hadn't done in his 23 years of living in the state.

We visited the Tabasco Plant in Avery Island with his Dad and Judy and had a blast. Only a portion of the plants are grown on Avery Island, which also houses one of five salt mines in Louisiana and an animal and plant preserve. It is home to the best place to view snowy egrets in Louisiana as a result of the McIlhenny Family's efforts to preserve the species. Many of the people who live and work on the island have been doing so for generations.

Tabasco means "hot and humid" and was started by the McIlhenny family and still a family owned business. If you want a larger description of the facility and how the plants are grown and produced check at this website.

One of the other items on Billy's list was visiting Abita Brewery. We raced through the rain to get there but made it just in time. This tour was short because it was during the week and they are actively brewing beer so we couldn't move freely in the brewhouse. Billy did however taste new beers and had a great time taking control of the tap, which any visitor can do. One thing we learned about Abita is that after the brewing process is complete they pasteurize their beer. This allows it to travel farther and stay on the shelf longer but you are heating it to 140 degrees after it is finished brewing which kills much of the flavor.
